Nowadays, it is not enough to speak only your native language. Beside that one, it is considered almost necessary to learn at least one or two more languages, preferably worldwide spoken ones, like English. But seeing that learning English is relatively easily accomplished by the majority of people, although very appreciated, English is not found very special anymore. So, the more difficult or exotic is the language you know, the more special you are perceived to be. As a consequence, more and more people find Chinese Language study a must. But this is not an easy language which you can learn by yourself. Everyone should overlook a lot of facts before they venture into Chinese Language study.

I would like to start by emphasizing my belief that for Chinese language study you must have talent and inclination towards learning foreign languages. This, because Chinese is not similar to any other language, hence you cannot rely on the fact that it is alike some language you may know. For instance, Spanish may seem easier to be learned for someone who knows Italian. But if we can’t tell the same about Chinese, what could people who want to learn Chinese do to make learning more easy?

First of all, in order for you to start to understand Chinese, you must learn how the primitive signs and symbols evolved and transformed into stylized ideograms. Furthermore, you must know that the language represents parts of life, rendered by more or less sharp lines. Only then you can begin the actual Chinese language study.

Thenceforth, you must start with phonetics. To make it as easy as possible you have to take character by character and study each one’s right pronunciation. This step will represent a large period of time in your Chinese language study. Because of the difficulty of the language, even supposing you are a very hard-working person, you could be able to learn around 50 characters in two weeks. According to this hypothesis, if you keep up this rhythm of studying, for a whole year, you can achieve the performance of knowing a number of Chinese characters, enough to carry it off well in everyday life. Some interesting facts are that only for reading a Chinese paper you need to know more than 3000 characters, a cultivated Chinese man knows about 6000-7000 characters, even though an integral Chinese dictionary, like Kangxi, contains over 40000 characters. From all these characters, nowadays, less than a quarter are used.

All in all, Chinese is a fascinating language which you should want to learn, despite its difficulty. China is one of the greatest mighty countries of the world, not to mention the captivating culture or the enchanting natural panoramas. For these reasons, China deserves to be discovered by learning more about the country. If you get fascinated by China, why not try begin Chinese language study? No one says it’s easy, because it’s a language based a lot on memory, but it could be satisfactory to reach at least basic conversational level. So, as a Chinese teacher might insist: learn, read, be hard-working!
